Today, we’re bringing you United and Divided , a series of stories on bridging the urban-rural divide. It's reported by Harvest Public Media .

In the wake of the 2016 presidential election one thing is clear: rural America and urban America see things differently. In this series of profiles, Harvest Public Media reporters introduce us to our fellow Americans and examine the issues that they hold dear. We re-discover the ties that bind us and learn more about the lines that divide us. And through these voices, we come to know Americans just a little bit better.

Reporters from Missouri, Colorado, Iowa and Nebraska explore topics causing rift in the country, and how those differences define the future. They looked at schools, religion, immigration and trade policy.

What is the Transatlantic Educators Dialogue (TED)?

The Transatlantic Education Dialogue (TED) is a one of a kind opportunity for educators in the United States of America and the European Union to come together online for shared exploration and examination of a variety of educational topics, such as immigration, religion in education, active teaching methods and issues related to identity and difference.

TED represents a unique experience in educational diplomacy and facilitates the exploration of new and diverse cultures. It is also a fantastic chance to build networks with European colleagues and foster global learning opportunities.

Who is involved with TED?

A total of 50 educators in the USA and the E.U. will be involved.

Participants may be current teachers, pre-service teacher education students, school administrators, graduate students, and education faculty.

Where does TED meet?

Participants can participate anywhere they are located, provided they have access to the internet. Class sessions are synchronous; readings and reflections take place asynchronously.

Synchronous sessions take place weekly for ninety minutes using Blackboard Collaborate. This online application enables registered participants to simultaneously communicate with classmates by using microphones connected to their computers, typing into a shared chat-rooms, contributing notes on a “chalkboard” tool, and using webcams and other capabilities to upload videos and picture images. Technical support for the program is provided by the University of Illinois, College of Education.

Prior to each weekly session, participants will have assigned readings representing US and EU perspectives on the topic. Readings will be available through a shared course website called Moodle.

Using Moodle, participants can share articles with other participants, post comments on topic-specific forums, and send messages to other participants.

Participants will be meeting on-line once a week for 90 minutes: Sundays (February 11 —May 6, 2018) 12:00-1:30 pm (U.S. Central Time Zone), 5:00-6:30 pm (Greenwich Mean Time). April 1 — no class.

Why participate in TED?

How much does TED cost?

Testimonials:

A few words about TED from past participants:

“Transatlantic Dialogue Educators was an invaluable experience and provided benefits of online collaboration for every attendee. It was a great place for open debate and mutual comparability of education in Europe and overseas, as well as the professional development of teachers participating.” –

“T.E.D. as a new form of transatlantic cooperation represents to me a totally new experience that has significantly enriched my professional CV. I am proud of all the new knowledge, new friends and acquaintances, and the opportunity to worthily present Croatia and how happy I am to be part of a great world educational system.”

“With TED, there are no borders, no divisions. Our goal is unified. TED allows me to interact with peers around the globe and provides a means to share educational methods on how to better engage my students. The program enables participants to collaborate creative ideas and discover ways to help make this world a better place through education. I am thankful for the personal growth TED provides by helping me to become a better educator, and a better person.” –

“I have participated in TED for three years, and each year I am inspired by teachers from around Europe and the U.S. to be more innovative and more connected beyond my classroom. The presentations each week highlight great teachers who are willing to share their knowledge and expertise. It’s like the recharge from going to a conference, but every week. Last year I got a kick out of telling my students I was presenting with a teacher from Norway. When I told them we were meeting to plan the presentation, my students wanted to know where we were meeting. The idea of working online with someone so far away didn’t cross their minds, but my experience with TED makes it seem normal.” –
